BIRMINGHAM, AL — Three people were shot, including a 6-year-old boy on 5th Avenue South in the East Avondale neighborhood Thursday. Police say the victims may have been targeted.

Two men, a woman and the child were in their car when 10 shots were fired at their car, according to Sgt. Road Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department.

The adults' injuries are not life-threatening, Mauldin said. However, the child was taken to Children's of Alabama with life-threatening injuries. As of 9 p.m., the child's condition had been upgraded from critical to stable.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests the victims' car was followed and the suspect opened fire from a white sedan.

"The vehicle struck a utility pole before coming to a rest in the roadway," Mauldin said. "Detectives have not established a clear motive in this investigation, however it appears the victims were targeted. No arrest has been made."
