A WalletHub study shows Alabama among the five most overweight and obese states in the country for 2021.
WASHINGTON, DC — A recent study reveals what has been a consistent problem in Alabama: the state ranks among the most overweight and obese states in the country.
Financial wellness website WalletHub released its report Monday on 2021's Most Overweight & Obese States in America, and Alabama ranks fifth among the most overweight states in the nation.
To determine which states contribute the most to America’s overweight and obesity problem, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 31 key metrics. They range from share of overweight and obese population to sugary-beverage consumption among adolescents to obesity-related health care costs.

Here is Alabama fared in the study:
- 3rd – percent of Obese Adults
- 27th – percent of Overweight Children
- 6th – percent of Obese Children
- 6th – percent of Physically Inactive Adults
- 5th – percent of Adults with High Cholesterol
- 5th – percent of Adults Eating Less than 1 Serving of Fruits/Vegetables per Day
- 2nd – percent of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes
- 2nd – percent of Adults with Hypertension
