Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- A judge ordered the City of Birmingham to pay $85,000 and court costs to Cynthia Thomas, who was injured in a 2017 accident involving a police car. Birmingham Police Officer Demarco Easley's negligence caused the accident when he failed to slow down and confirm the intersection was clear before proceeding. The compensation was for Thomas's "pain, suffering, and mental anguish." (AL.com)
- A fatal accident occurred on the southbound lanes of I-459 at Liberty Parkway yesterday (Feb. 16). Emergency crews were on the scene of the 8:00 a.m. accident which involved a bobtail tractor-trailer — a truck without the trailer attached. The scene remained active while officials waited for the coroner to arrive and people were advised to avoid the area if possible. (WBRC)
- The opening of the Craig Crisis Care Center in Birmingham has been delayed due to a shortage of nurses. The facility, which was set to open next week, is a 16,000-square-foot center designed to provide support to people experiencing mental health or substance use crises. As of yesterday, only six out of the 28 posted nursing positions were filled. (WBRC)
