Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. On Friday morning, the parking garage on the side of 19th Street and 2nd Avenue North had some of its siding destroyed from the heavy winds experienced in the storm. The owner of the garage reported that the building went through an inspection about a year ago and no structural issues were found, and the damaged siding was present during the inspection. Two cars were struck by pieces that fell from the building, but one of the car owners reported that he was able to get his car out and away from the rubble. (WBRC)
  2. With March being Women's History Month, it is the perfect time to highlight and take note of a few women who have not just made tremendous impacts on the Birmingham community, but the history of the United States. Bham Now featured a list of five extraordinary women in the Birmingham community, including Condoleezza Rice, Madam Louise Wooster, Vonetta Flowers, Nina Miglionico, and Jane Stephens Comer. Whether these individuals are Birmingham natives or not, these women left impacts in their respective fields, including African American history, Olympics history, civil rights, education and empowerment for women, and medical treatments. (Bham Now)
  3. The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority in partnership with the City of Birmingham has received a planning grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation that aims to reconnect with communities cut off by the existing infrastructures in place. The current transportation infrastructure limits the connectivity of many historic Birmingham neighborhoods, especially in Black neighborhoods, which has made an increased dependency rate on car transportation. The aim of this plan is to change the car dependency rate in Birmingham so that citizens can instead rely on public transportation and other means of travel without any limitations for a greater quality of life.
