Iconic Quinlan Castle In 5 Points To Be Demolished

BIRMINGHAM, AL — One of Birmingham's iconic landmarks will be demolished soon. Quinlan Castle, an apartment complex built in 1927, will be demolished in December or January to make way for Southern Research's Center for Pandemic Resilience, according to AL.com.

The building has been empty for 30 years, and was purchased by Southern Research in 2008 from the City of Birmingham.

Although preservation efforts were well-intended for the building over the years, engineers close to the project have deemed the historic building as unusable.

The Center for Pandemic Resilience will be a five-story $65 million to $70 million structure that would lure more than 100 scientists to the city and generate an economic impact of $130 million, the AL.com report says.

"Nobody likes to see historic buildings torn down, but I think they get why we’re doing it," Southern research CEO Josh Carpenter told AL.com. "They know we’re serious about it and they know we’re going to do something big behind it."
