BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 29-year-old Birmingham man is dead after a shooting in Ensley Tuesday night. The shooting occurred just before 8 p.m. at the Marathon gas station on 19th Street.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said officers found Jequaris Jerryll McCann unresponsive in the parking lot of the gas station, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation suggests several suspects entered McCann’s vehicle while it was parked at the location and unoccupied. Fitzgerald said the suspects were in the process of stealing McCann’s vehicle when shots were fired, fatally wounding him.
