Teen Girl Among 2 People Killed In Birmingham Shooting

A 49-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl are dead after a shooting Saturday night in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 16-year-old girl and a 49-year-old man are dead after a shooting Saturday night in Birmingham. The shooting occurred just after 9 p.m. at 16th Way Southwest and Matt Leonard Drive.

Sgt Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said officers responded to a call of a person shot at the location and discovered 49-year-old Franklin Harris laying unresponsive in the middle of the road next to a motorcycle.

Harris suffered from an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue. Officers and detectives were also alerted of another gunshot victim, 16-year-old Yasmine Wright, who was taken by personal vehicle to Birmingham Fire Station 25 at 3015 Wilson Road.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the victim to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Mauldin said.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests Franklin Harris turned onto 16th Way Southwest and laid the motorcycle down in the roadway, when the suspects drove onto a grassy area at the intersection and stopped.

"The suspects reportedly exited the vehicle and fired shots fatally wounding Harris," Mauldin said. "Yasmine Wright was the passenger in a vehicle passing in the area when she was struck by gunfire."

The suspects are still at large, Mauldin said. Anyone who has information pertaining to the case is asked to please contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764.
