  1. UAB Hospital was rated among the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The hospital was given the highest level possible — rated “high-performing” — in the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity Care rankings. Only 297 of the 649 hospitals that submitted maternity data to U.S. News this year earned a high-performing rating. (Yellowhammer News)
  2. Leaders recently approved a $12 million resurfacing deal that will span every district in the city. With the approval comes improvements to nearly 43 miles of Birmingham roads as part of a five-year plan. Colin Alexander with the Department of Transportation said, “Resurface it, restripe it; if there is a segment where we are adding in bike lanes, those will be added afterward.” (WBRC)
  3. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has proposed building mini-houses for the city’s homeless population. The plan, which calls for building up to 100 pre-fabricated homes with a bed, heating, and cooling, will be presented to the city council on Jan. 10. If the mayor’s plan and purchase are approved, the company Pallet Shelter will build the units. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
