- President Joe Biden signed the federal omnibus appropriation bill into law on Dec. 29, 2022 that will send $76 million in federal funding to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The funding will be used to develop a new biomedical research and psychology building. The project already received $76 million in federal appropriation, totaling $152 million in federal funding. (Yellowhammer News)
- The Birmingham Police Department is investigating two homicides that occurred over the weekend and its sixth murder investigation for 2023. Officers arrived at the 5000 block of 43rd Street North to an unidentified juvenile or young adult with a gunshot wound in the residence's backyard on Saturday night. The second homicide occurred a couple hours later on Sunday morning on the 100 block of 4th Avenue North, where an off-duty officer found a female in the street with a gunshot wound and 31-year-old Thomas Lee Bailey, who was unresponsive in a vehicle hit by bullets. - The City of Birmingham is doing its best to support Selma residents in the cleanup and recovery of Thursday's tornado. Birmingham and Hoover workers traveled to Selma on Saturday to help clear roadway debris. The Christian Service Mission and Weil Wrecker Service will begin a supply drive for residents impacted by the disaster. Donations will be accepted at Boutwell Auditorium on Jan. 17-19 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (WBRC)

- The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is joining the effort to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in area elementary schools.
