Captured Raccoon In Mountain Brook Tests Positive For Rabies

A raccoon caught along Brookwood Road in Mountain Brook tested positive for rabies Oct. 26.

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — A raccoon caught along Brookwood Road tested positive for rabies Oct. 26, according to a report from Village Living.

Animal control confirmed the case and said it is the only one it has found so far — though the raccoon may have passed the disease on before it died. A few animals have tested positive for distemper, which is a viral disease that resembles rabies.

Rabies is transmitted by saliva, so residents should keep their pets isolated from wild animals and up-to-date on vaccinations while being sure not to leave food outside.
