Here are the top three stories today in Mountain Brook:

  1. The Musicians of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra is presenting two free community concerts this month. The first one took place last week at Canterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook, but if you missed it there's still time to catch the second at Greater Emmanuel Temple Holiness Church, in Birmingham, on September 18 at 3 p.m. Participants are encouraged to donate to the nonprofit's One Place Family Justice Center and Scrollworks Music School. (Over The Mountain Journal)
  2. The State of Alabama is in need of paid poll workers for the general elections in November, who will staff over 1,000 polling locations. Workers must be registered to vote in the county they're serving in. Students 16 and older can serve as poll worker interns with a school recommendation. (AL.com)
  3. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called a wave of shootings over Labor Day weekend in the area "unacceptable" in a Tuesday press conference. The violence, from Friday through Monday, took seven people's lives. Since August 31 the city has launched a new program called "Operation Silent Night," aimed at reducing violent crime. (WVTM 13)
