- A local man's efforts to beautify Birmingham's highway exits and entrance ramps have garnered support from volunteers and even the city itself. Mountain Brook resident Ralph Yeilding, who started picking up trash in preparation for the World Games last year, now leads a team of dedicated individuals maintaining the flower beds near 21st Avenue South and Red Mountain Expressway. The group not only receives assistance from the Birmingham city greenhouse for plants but also utilizes its equipment for soil preparation, while also exploring new strategies to enhance the region's beauty. - Legislators and policy experts are urging the Alabama Senate to vote on House Bill 298, which would require manufacturers to activate adult content filters on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. The bill, known as the Protection of Minors from Unfiltered Devices Act, would leverage existing filters that can currently be disabled. Said State Sen. Dan Roberts (R-Mountain Brook), "This is a simple software update ... that will have the opportunity to protect minors in this state from something that is long-term a crisis for them as they grow older." - Multiple Mountain Brook businesses and their owners are in the running for the Alabama Retailer of the Year Awards, designated by the Alabama Retail Association. Local nominees include Ex Voto Vintage, Town and Country Clothes, Teenie's Take-Home Market, Church Street Coffee and Books, MELT, and a'mano. Once all nominees submit their entry information by Jun. 5, a judging panel will select the finalists. (Over the Mountain Journal)
