Here are the top three stories in Mountain Brook today:

  1. Mountain Brook City Council candidate Christopher Powanda is facing criticism for past posts made to his social media accounts, in which he appeared to share misinformation regarding the 2020 presidential election. The posts have since been deleted. Powanda also faced assault allegations in Connecticut more than 20 years ago for his involvement in a bar fight, however, charges eventually were reduced to misdemeanor public disturbance. (Alabama Political Reporter)

â• Correction: The digest about the Mountain Brook City Council candidate originally misstated the crime of which Mr. Powanda was accused. As a college student, he was involved in a fight between his then-girlfriend, an off-duty police officer and another person. He was charged with assault in 1997, and those charges later were reduced to misdemeanor public disturbance.
  2. The Spartan Athletic Foundation was the subject of the latest episode of the Mountain Brook Schools podcast. Richard Keller, the foundation's president, spoke with Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow. (PodBean)
  3. Residents from Mountain Brook and beyond expressed a flurry of concerns with the plans to add a new lane to US 280 as early as Spring 2023. The plan would reduce lane sizes from 12 to 11 feet and remove the road's median, which led many to express safety concerns. Residents worried the expansion would overall lead to more traffic and make it more difficult to get in and out of the community. (Village Living)
