- The Mountain Brook Police Department is expanding its Special Needs Alert Program to better assist individuals with special needs. By allowing people to provide information about their loved ones who may have disabilities or special needs, law enforcement will be more prepared to respond to local emergencies involving these individuals, whether it's someone with mental illness, a child with special needs, or someone with dementia. The program aims to ensure that this vulnerable population can receive the necessary support and calm during emergencies until further help can be provided. (WVTM)
- The Yellowhammer Fund organized a reproductive justice rally in Linn Park in nearby Birmingham to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The event aimed to raise awareness about reproductive health care resources in Alabama and launched the group's Reproductive Justice Bus Tour across the state. The tour provides essential items and support while highlighting the limited access to care due to the state's restrictive abortion laws, which only allow exceptions when a mother's life is at risk. - On Saturday, Jun. 24, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting incident in unincorporated northeastern Jefferson County. Upon arrival, they found a one-year-old child with multiple gunshot wounds and his 34-year-old father deceased from his injuries. The incident stemmed from an ongoing neighborhood dispute, resulting in an argument during which 19-year-old Adaryon Coachman fired several shots, hitting both the deceased father and the child. Coachman was arrested and is facing charges of capital murder and first-degree assault, with the capital murder charge carrying no bond. (Jefferson County Sheriff's Office)
