- The Mountain Brook basketball team beat Shades Valley 74-57 last week. On Tuesday the team will host Gadsden City at 6 p.m. in sub-regional play. (AL.com)
- Lance Lefeur, Director of the Alabama Department of Emergency Management, on Friday defended his agency's response to the Moody landfill fire which has been burning underground since November, saying it has "done everything within its authority" to get it under control. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it should "stop smoking" within two weeks. (WVTM 13)
- In statewide news, Rep. Nathaniel Ledbetter, who is set to lead the Alabama House of Representatives when it starts its session on March 7, said one of his biggest priorities is improving education. The state had a $2.7 billion surplus in its education budget at the start of the year, and in national rankings released in October Alabama fourth graders were ranked at 39th in the country–up from 49th place previously.
