Mountain Brook Golfer Named National Golf Player Of The Year
Mountain Brook's Gordon Sargent was named the National Boys Golf Player of the Year by the USA Today.
MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — Mountain Brook's golf teams have gained their fair share of accolades over the years, with multiple state champiosnhips and a steady stream of golfers going on to play at the college level, and recent MBHS grad Gordon Sargent is no exception.
Sargent was named the National Boys Golf Player of the Year by the USA Today last week. Sargent graduated from Mountain Brook High School in May and will attend Vanderbilt University this fall where he will compete as a member of the men’s golf team.
“We’re all extremely pleased with Gordon’s award,” Mountain Brook Athletic Director Benny Eaves said. “But more importantly he is deserving because of his work ethic and the impact he has made on those around him.”

Sargent was initially one of the 47 honorees for the award. He was then selected as one of three finalists. He edged out premiere golfers from all over the country to earn the title of ‘Player of the Year.’
Sargent leaves Mountain Brook as one of the most decorated athletes in recent history. Just this past year, he won the individual and team state championship for 6A boys golf. He was the low medalist at the state championship this year as well as his freshman year in 2018.

He shot a 17-under par 267 to win his second straight Alabama State Amateur Championship in June. The first weekend in August, Gordon finished runner-up at the Western Amateur. Among many other highlights and recognitions, Sargent looks to build on his established success as he and his Vanderbilt teammates compete in the Southeastern Conference.
“His burning desire to be great and to be coachable are two of his greatest strengths,” Scott Limbaugh, men’s golf head coach at Vanderbilt said. “He is a high achiever in everything he does and I know he will represent Vanderbilt University and our golf program the right way during his time in Nashville.”
Sargent and his teammates at Vanderbilt begin their fall campaign September 3-5 in Pebble Beach, CA. as they compete in the Carmel Cup.
