  1. The Mountain Brook City Council approved plans to study stormwater mitigation strategies near Mountain Brook Junior High School. The city is working with Schoel Engineering Company to design pontential up-basin drainage, in order to prevent the type of flooding seen in May 2021. (Village Living)
  2. Two Bibb County law enforcement deputies – Brad Johnson and Christopher Poole – were shot in the line of duty while chasing a man facing murder charges on Wednesday. Johnson later died in a Birmingham hospital while Poole is in stable condition. The man they were chasing, Austin Hall, 26, was captured on Thursday morning. "Our prayers are with the Johnson Family, Bibb County S.O., and law enforcement officers across the nation who continue to courageously brave the badge," said the Mountain Brook Police Department in a statement. "Deputy Johnson, we’ll take it from here. You’ll forever be remembered a hero. Take rest in heavenly peace." (WVTM13 Birmingham)
  3. The Mountain Brook Croquet Club hosted its first ever golf croquet championship on a hot and humid Saturday last month, with visiting players from Georgia and Tennessee. The club typically holds games on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. (Village Living)

Are you a Mountain Brook resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
