New Highway 280 Pedestrian Bridge In The Works

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — After more than two years of planning and discussion, a plan for a pedestrian bridge over Highway 280 joining Mountain Brook and Homewood is moving forward. A revised rendering of the bridge project was recently released in a report by Bham Now.

"Although it has taken longer than expected, the solution Jefferson County Roads & Transportation has come up with ALDOT support is a better, safer bridge servicing this vital area of Jefferson County," Homewood City Councilor Jennifer Andress told Bham Now. "It has been an absolute pleasure to work with all the leaders involved, from the JeffCo Commission, all 3 cities and our state representation."

The project, dubbed the Highway 280 Neighborhood Improvement District Co-operative, is slated to feature an eight-foot-wide bridge, which backers say will cost a little over $1 million. The cities of Homewood and Mountain Brook have agreed to contribute $200,000 each.

The Highway 280 Neighborhood Improvement District Co-operative consists of:

• Jefferson County Commissioner Steve Ammons (President)
• Homewood City Councilor Jennifer Andress (Vice-President)
• Mountain Brook City Councilor Alice Womack (Treasurer)
• Birmingham City Councilors Darrell O-Quinn and Valerie Abbott
• Mountain Brook City Council President Virginia Smith
• Former Homewood City Council President Peter Wright
