Here are the top three stories in Mountain Brook today

  1. A man identifying himself as "Mr. Smith" opened gun fire in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills on Thursday evening, fatally shooting two people – Walter “Bart” Rainey, 84, from Irondale, and Sarah Yeager, 75, from Pelham – and critically injuring another, Jane Pounds, 84, from Hoover. The tragic shooting took place at a potluck dinner after 6 p.m. Police from neighboring towns, including Mountain Brook, were on the scene to assist. “Vestavia Hills is a close-knit, resilient, loving community and I want to state first and foremost our prayers go out to the victims and families affected by this senseless act of violence,’' said Vestavia Hills Mayor Ashley Curry. (AL.com)
  2. Eighteen families were relocated to a hotel in Homewood on Tuesday, after the apartment complex they were living in was deemed structurally unstable. Work on the building is ongoing. (WVTM 13)
  3. Many garbage pickup routes normally serviced on Thursday will be done today in Mountain Brook, including Balmoral Road, Cambridge Road, Cherokee Road, Dell Road and more. The city cites "unforeseen mechanical failure to the satellite truck" as the reason. (City of Mountain Brook)
