Former Hewitt-Trussville Star QB Paul Tyson Leaving Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, AL —Former Hewitt-Trussville standout quarterback Paul Tyson, who just finished his redshirt sophomore season at Alabama, announced Tuesday on social media that he has entered the NCAA's transfer portal.

Tyson, who is the great-grandson of former Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, will have three years of eligibility remaining and be eligible to play at his new school next season.

"I would like to start by thanking Coach (Nick) Saban for giving me the opportunity to play for Alabama these past 3 years and to be part of winning a national championship," Tyson wrote on Twitter. "It was a lifelong dream of mine."

Tyson added: "I would also like to extend profound gratitude to my teammates and wish them the best. We will be friends forever. I will always treasure the experiences and friendships I have gained over the past years! The University of Alabama will always hold a spot in my heart."

Tyson was one of seven Crimson Tide players who entered the transfer portal after the team's loss to Georgia on Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship, according to ESPN.com.

The 6-foot-5, 228-pound Tyson threw passes in five games this past season —going 10-for-16 for 150 yards. He also was the primary holder on field goal and PAT attempts.

In high school, Tyson went 19-5 as a starter for Hewitt-Trussville, throwing for more than 6,500 yards and 69 touchdowns. He completed 68.2 percent of his passes, which ranks second all-time in ASHAA history at the 7A level.

A 2018 Elite 11 finalist, Tyson also was selected to the Class 7A All-State first team in 2017 by the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA).

While at Hewitt-Trussville, Tyson was rated as a four-star prospect and top 350 All-American by PrepStar. He was ranked as the No. 12 overall player in Alabama by 247 Sports and the No. 14 pocket passer in the nation by ESPN.com.

Tyson chose Alabama over Kentucky, LSU, Notre Dame and Michigan.
