Accused Mail Thieves Arrested By Vestavia Hills PD

Vestavia police believe three suspects seen tampering with a mailbox in Cahaba Heights are part of a widespread mail theft operation.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — Vestavia Hills police arrested three suspects in a mail theft investigation Sunday after an officer witnessed one of the suspects tampering with a mail box in Cahaba Heights.

The VEstavia PD issued a statement saying the officer observed a suspicious vehicle at the Cahaba Heights Post Office located in the 3100 block of Sunview Drive early Sunday morning and witnessed the tampering of the mail box.

Officers detained the vehicle, along with three occupants. Through probable cause, a vehicle search was conducted and officers located firearms, marijuana and a backpack containing a large amount of unopened mail belonging to multiple people in the Jefferson county area, as well as 48 checks belonging to various people.

Vestavia police said that the preliminary investigation suggests that the large amount of mail and checks may have been taken from various post offices in the metro area.

This is an on-going investigation and warrants are pending.

VHPD is asking the public to ensure that any outgoing checks, bills, or payments be checked to ensure that the payment was received and deposited under the correct names.
