Man Dies After Traffic Stop In Vestavia

A man died following a traffic stop and medical emergency in Vestavia Hills Monday night.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — A man is dead after Vestavia Hills police conducted a traffic stop Monday night. The driver of the vehicle suffered a medical emergency at the scene, according to Vestavia police.

Police conducted the traffic stop at approximately 9 p.m. on Hwy 31 at Interstate 65. The driver was arrested for outstanding warrants and was taken to a patrol car, where he then suffered an apparent seizure, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

Paramedics responded to the scene, where the driver, identified as 46-year-old Michael John Hughes of Sterrett, was pronounced dead by the Hoover Fire Department.

Investigators from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are handling the case, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
