Morgan Road Sinkhole to Be Repaired

After a sinkhole formed in the Western Supermarket parking lot in July, construction is underway to replace the collapsed storm drain.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — The Morgan Road sinkhole saga is currently being resolved by the City of Vestavia Hills as construction is now underway to fix the storm drains that caused a portion of the Western Supermarket parking lot to cave in back in July. The city council approved a measure in July allowing emergency funds to address the storm drains and other infrastructural issues.

According to the city, the corrugated metal pipe in the drain had "reached the end of its design life" and is now being replaced in a process that should take five to seven days. The construction will affect parking and traffic for Western Supermarket and Rocky Ridge Drug Company, but only temporarily.

The city said in a Facebook post that it might become necessary to close part of Morgan Road in the process of fixing the drain and that it would announce any interruption as soon as it becomes known.
