Traffic Studies On Grants Mill, Cahaba Beach Road To Proceed In Late 2017

Two studies proposed to explore traffic relief for U.S. 280 are moving forward before the end of the year.

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — A study on Grants Mill Road that was approved to explore traffic relief for U.S. 280 is set to begin before the end of the year. The study was approved by the city of Birmingham in 2015 to look for ways to relocate and widen Grants Mill between Highway 119 and I-459.

The study was a joint effort between Birmingham, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Irondale, Hoover, Leeds, Jefferson County, Shelby County and the Birmingham Water Works Board. The city has been working to finalize funding agreements for the $1.04 million project and draft memoranda of understanding between involved entities. Once these steps are completed and the study produces results, the project will be opened up to public meetings to present design options.

In addition to the Grants Mill study, ALDOT is exploring the relocation of parts of Cahaba Beach Road in Shelby County, as well as the construction of a bridge over Little Cahaba River, to alleviate traffic on U.S. 280.
Plans are currently in the environmental review, and a public hearing on the issue is set for Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Liberty Park Middle School from 5 to 7 p.m. (For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Birmingham Patch morning newsletter.)
