Vestavia Schools See Continued Decrease In COVID-19 Cases

VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — The number of students in the Vestavia Hills school system with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis has decreased again, as the system reported 48 cases among students for the week ending Sept. 10.

As well, the system reported that 65 students were absent for close contact. The largest decrease in absences in VHCS are for those students who were sent home for close contacts. Of the 659 students sent home for close contact, only 28 later tested positive.

"The decreasing number of students who are absent for a positive is consistent with trends throughout Jefferson County," superintendent Todd Freeman said. "Our exceptional teachers are challenging students through engaging learning experiences. Students are rising to those challenges while displaying remarkable perseverance."

Vestavia Hills City Schools placed a mask mandate for students and staff Sept. 1, amid some opposition among the community. However, Freeman said the mask mandate will remain in place for now.

"Face masks continue to be required indoors for all staff, students, and visitors," Freeman said. "A priority for our system is for students to attend school and learn in a safe and nurturing environment. The goal for our long-term health and wellness strategy is to maintain that important balance. Accordingly, we continue to evaluate our plan to make adjustments and improvements."
