- The governing body of Alaska’s largest city has overridden the mayor’s veto of an emergency order instituting a mask mandate for 60 days. The Anchorage Assembly on Thursday overturned Mayor Dave Bronson’s veto of the measure requiring masks by most everyone in indoor public spaces on a 9-2 vote. (U.S. News & World Report)
- The Anchorage Police Department received a call reporting that a driver was passed out behind the wheel of a gray Honda Odyssey at West 25th and Spenard. Officers arrived and spotted a firearm and drug paraphernalia sitting on the center console in plain view. Police were able to open the van’s door and retrieve the handgun without waking the occupant. Afterward, officers roused the driver, identified as 40-year-old Geoffrey A. Jackson, who complied with commands and was detained without incident. (Alaska Native News)
- An organization for Alaska pediatricians denounced recent statements by the Anchorage Health Department’s chief medical officer in a letter on Thursday, calling into question his objectivity, saying he made several inaccurate statements, and questioning his fitness for the role.
