Here are the top stories today in Anchorage:
- 33-year-old Russell A. Haube was charged with murder on Monday in a shooting at a downtown Anchorage apartment complex. Haube had approached the Backpackers Annex at 421 Eagle St. from outside on Saturday night and fired multiple shots into a second-story apartment unit. He has been charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree misconduct involving a weapon, third-degree misconduct involving a weapon (felon in possession) and four counts of reckless endangerment. - The Library Advisory Board (LAB) is against moving the library to the Parks & Recreation Department. The nine-member LAB unanimously passed a resolution opposing Mayor Bronson’s plan to move the Anchorage Public Library under the Parks and Recreation Department, where they say a “non-librarian” would oversee the library system. LAB sent their resolution to the Anchorage Assembly last week and expressed concerns that there’s little budgetary savings to the city by moving the Anchorage Public Library and that such a move would dilute the essential role of the library. - Mayor Bronson is in quarantine after the head of the Anchorage Community Development Authority tested positive for COVID-19. The mayor had been in close contact with Mike Robbins, executive director of the Anchorage Community Development Authority, at a Visit Anchorage event last week. Corey Allen Young, spokesman for the mayor’s office, said that Bronson is following the city’s COVID-19 mitigation policy and quarantining for six days, and on the sixth day he will be tested for the virus.
