Here are the top stories today in Anchorage:
- For the past 13 years, pharmacy students at the University of Alaska Anchorage — along with local licensed pharmacists and nurses who volunteer their time to supervise the students — have devoted their October weekends to administering flu shots in assisted living homes citywide. This past Saturday, the students also brought vials of the Pfizer vaccine to administer booster shots to vulnerable residents. State health officials have stressed the importance of getting a flu shot this year to protect individual people and Alaska’s vulnerable health care system against yet another highly contagious respiratory illness. - Food Network star Guy Fieri was spotted filming in front of Tequila 61 in Anchorage on Friday. Fieri is known for winning the second season of "The Next Food Network Star" as well as hosting a series of shows on the network. Upon spotting the TV star via social media, Congressman Don Young invited Fieri to "meet at a diner, drive-in, or dive" and hinted at his "very tasty recipe for moose stew." (Must Read Alaska)
- Hilcorp Alaska, which took over BP Alaska operations, has made a decision to not mandate vaccines for employees. As of Oct. 15, the company is encouraging vaccinations and monitoring for any government mandates. All Hilcorp employees, regardless of vaccination status, must be tested within 24 hours of flying to the North Slope or Cook Inlet platform. The company is also paying for the testing for both unvaccinated and vaccinated contractors, as well as the cost isolation for any vaccinated employee or contractor who tests positive in Anchorage but does not live locally.
