ARIZONA — U.S. Sen. Martha McSally has survived a primary challenge and will advance to the November ballot, where she'll run for a full six-year term. She will go on to face Democratic opponent Mark Kelly, who ran for his party's nomination unopposed and won.

McSally had a big lead over McCarthy, a conservative businessman from Scottsdale.

McSally was a trailblazer in the U.S. Air Force, the first woman to fly in combat and to lead a fighter squadron out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. She has served in the U.S. Senate since 2019, when she was appointed by Gov. Doug Ducey to fill the late Sen. John McCain's vacant seat.

Kelly flew combat missions for the Navy during Operation Desert Storm before becoming an astronaut, where he flew four missions to the International Space Station. Kelly is married to former Tucson Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot during a meeting with constituents in 2011, and has become a gun control advocate in the years since.
