WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump took a victory lap on Thursday, the day after the U.S. Senate voted to acquit him on articles of impeachment.

After slamming Democrats for engaging in an unfair partisan “witch hunt” against him, Trump welcomed what he called “total acquittal” and singled out his friends in Congress who had his back along the way.

That included two Arizona Republicans who had Trump’s back throughout the proceedings: Reps. Andy Biggs and Debbie Lesko.

“Andy Biggs,” Trump said from the podium. “There’s a guy, he’s tough. I hear we’re doing well in Arizona, huh? It’s going good, yeah? I think so. I think I saw a poll that was very good — for me.”

Bigg has been a vocal defender of Trump from his position as chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and as a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which held the first vote on impeachment articles last year.

Trump said he’s optimistic that Arizona Republican Sen. Martha McSally will hold onto her seat in the November election.

“I think Martha’s going to do good,” he said. “Arizona’s been great and we’re stopping illegal aliens from coming in, we’re putting up walls.”

The president also praised Lesko, who also serves on the Judiciary Committee and whom he picked for his impeachment defense team of House lawmakers. That team provided messaging support, and Lesko and the other members flooded the airwaves to defend Trump in recent weeks.

“I like the name Lesko,” Trump said Thursday.

“You have no idea how much the public appreciates how smart, how sharp you are,” he told her at the White House event.

“What she does out there is incredible. Arizona loves her,” he said. “You were so incredible representing — I don’t say me — representing our country and getting it out of this impeachment hoax. What you did was incredible.”
