2020 U.S. Census Results: The Changing Demographics Of Tempe

TEMPE, AZ — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic community

These changes were reflected in Tempe, where the share of the white population fell by 3 percent while the Hispanic population grew by 16 percent. Other groups saw even more dramatic increases, with a Black population increase of 26 percent and a 90 percent increase in the Asian population. Tempe's total population as of the 2020 census was 180,587. That total includes a white population of 97,651, a Hispanic population of 39,698, an Asian population of 17,169 and a Black population of 11,393.

Tempe also showed an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as multiracial, although the reasons are complex. The number of people in Tempe who identified themselves as being more than one race increased by 114 percent to 8,692. Experts say the increase reflects changes in the way people identify themselves as well the number of children born to parents of mixed races or ethnicities, along with changes in the wording of census forms themselves.
