Olivia, step aside, there's a new popular name for girls born within the last year.
CALIFORNIA — For the first time in five years, Olivia was downgraded to the second most popular name for newborn girls, according to the most recent data from the Social Security Administration.
Mia emerged as the most popular name in the Golden State this year, with 1,986 newborns given the name in 2024. Olivia, long the most popular girl's name of the vintage trend, had held the No. 1 spot on that list since 2019.
The Social Security Administration publishes the most popular baby names by state every May.

Meanwhile, the name Mia is the fifth most popular girls' name nationwide, with Olivia maintaining the top spot in the U.S., according to 2024 data.
Mia is generally considered a feminine name and is derived from Latin and Scandinavian origins.

"Mia, a tiny name with international appeal, shares Scandinavian and Spanish roots, meaning 'mine' with the alternative and uplifting meaning of someone 'beloved,'" according to TheBump.com.
Technically, though, the name Sofia or Sophia — considering both spellings — is the most popular name in the Golden State. More than 2,920 babies were named Sofia or Sophia last year.

For boys, Liam is the most popular name with 2,716 males given the name in 2024. Noah pulled in second place with 2,674 babies given that name last year.
The name Liam has Irish origins and tends to mean "helmet of will, protection; strong-willed warrior," according to TheBump.com.
This year also saw three new boys' names enter the top 10 list: Ezra, Lucas and Ethan.
