Remains Of 7th Boater Found After Lake Tahoe Tragedy

Two people survived after the boat capsized amid high waves and heavy winds. Seven are confirmed dead and one remains missing.

EL DORADO COUNTY, CA — The body of a seventh boater was recovered Sunday evening, authorities said Monday, after a vessel capsized Saturday in Lake Tahoe amid high waves and heavy winds, killing many on board.

Search and rescue operations were continuing Monday, with dive teams attempting to find the eighth and final missing boater, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

"At this time, there are 2 survivors, 7 deceased, and still 1 missing," the sheriff's office said Monday in a social media post. "The identifications of the deceased from this terrible incident will not be released until proper notifications have been made."

The sheriff's office received multiple reports Saturday afternoon of a capsized boat in the lake near D.L. Bliss State Park, authorities said, adding that callers told emergency personnel that about 10 people were in the water and waves were as high as 8 feet.

The bodies of six adults were pulled from the lake, according to the sheriff’s office. Two people were rescued and taken to a hospital, and two more remained missing overnight, authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the missing boaters shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday after authorities searched over 390 square miles for 12 combined hours, according to the agency, which noted the search included boat, air and K-9 personnel.

The vessel that capsized was a 27-foot Chris-Craft boat, according to the Coast Guard, which reported 30-knot winds at the time of the incident.
