CALIFORNIA — Representative Robert Garcia announced Thursday that he will be looking to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, according to a report from The New York Times.

The announcement by Garcia (D-CA) comes amidst an intense battle over generational shifts and power struggles within Congress, where the Democratic Party is assessing whether it is time for older members to make way for a younger generation, according to the report from The New York Times.

Garcia, 47, is one of four Democrats vying for a House Oversight Committee spot since Representative Gerald E. Connolly of Virginia stepped down from the post last month due to his battle with cancer, according to the report by The New York Times. Conolly died last week at the age of 75.
