Follow In P-22's Footsteps For Wildlife Week

Urban Wildlife Week started Monday kicking off events across the city to celebrate Angelenos' favorite cougar, P-22.

AGOURA HILLS, CA — It's time to celebrate Los Angeles' favorite cougar.

Monday marked the start of Save LA Cougars' Urban Wildlife Week, culminating with P-22 day on Festival on Saturday.

Throughout the week, wildlife lovers and cougar fans followed P-22's famous journey. The 50 mile hike split between five days traces P-22's path through the Santa Monica Mountains and Los Angeles.

"P-22, born in the Santa Monica Mountains, made an incredible journey across two of the busiest freeways in America — the 101 and the 405 — to find a home in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park. P-22’s story is fueling a new conservation movement, showing that wildlife and people can coexist in mutual wonderment," according to Save LA Cougars, the sponsor of Urban Wildlife Week.

The hike kicked off Monday at the Wallis Anneberg Wildlife Crossing site, the Liberty Canyon exit on the Ventura (101) Freeway. For more information, visit this link.

"Tracked virtually by people worldwide, this journey will illustrate how the promise of connectivity is integral not just for the future of mountain lions, but for all wildlife such as salamanders, birds and butterflies," Save LA Cougars wrote on its website.

The main event, P-22 Day Festival, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 pm. Saturday in Griffith Park. The free event draws in thousands of attendees every year and will include a rock-climbing wall, live music, surprise guests and more. For more information, visit this link.

A number of other events will mark the week. Save LA Cougars unveiled a P-22-themed mural in Silverlake at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The bright ode to P-22, created by local street artist Corie Mattie, sits outside Hype Fitness at 1932 Hyperion Ave.

On Friday, TreePeople will host a P-22 event at 12 p.m. at 12601 Mulholland Drive.
