Boy Scouts Give Back to Mom on Mother's Day

For $5, you receive an all-you-can eat breakfast, consisting of pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, bagels, coffee, juice and milk, ordered and served to your table by the scouts.

This is the only fundraiser the troop does, other than the national fundraiser of selling popcorn, troop scout master “My father and a few other scout fathers started this breakfast in 1963 at Malibou Lake, and it’s been here ever since,” he said.

The event seems to get bigger each year, said Michael Sheets, a scout leader for the past seven years.

"We expect that over 5,000 people have come through here during the four hour brunch," he said.

In addition, many local businesses, including day spas, shops and restaurants donate gift cards or items for gift baskets that are raffled off. Tickets are sold for $2 or $5, depending on the value of the basket.

In total, they make somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 with breakfast ticket sales and raffle ticket sales, said Sheets.

The community donates almost everything they use for the breakfast, according to Gunn, and the money is use to buy camping equipment for the troop and for helping support boys who want to participate in scouts but cannot afford it.

"We've been coming to these since 1979," said area resident Marvin Gainer. "We love it."

Another diner, Karen Nirenberg, said she had heard about the event through a resident and brought the whole family. "This is awesome," she said.
