ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda has completed its draft Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Self Evaluation & Transition Plan and invites the public to comment.

The ADA prohibits local governments from discriminating against people with disabilities and requires a self-evaluation and plan for transitioning to ADA compliance.

“Alameda is committed to being an accessible city and strives to provide equal opportunities and a seamless experience for all its residents,” said Public Works Director Erin Smith. “This draft Transition Plan benchmarks where we are at now and provides a roadmap for how to prioritize resources towards improving accessibility.”

The City’s draft includes policies, programs, and facilities, setting priorities in a phased approach to addressing identified accessibility barriers.

Public comment is due by May 17. The Draft ADA Self Evaluation & Transition Plan is available online. If an accommodation is required to provide input, email Erin Smith at ADA@alamedaca.gov or call 510-747-7930.

The ADA Self Evaluation & Transition Plan will be presented at the Commission on Persons with Disabilities on June 5, and then at City Council for consideration and adoption this summer.
