'How to Hold a Chicken' Demo in Albany

You'd think that holding a chicken is simple. And it is – if you do it properly. This brief video shows chicken-holding expert Linnea Due giving a recent demonstration in Albany with Billy, a 7-year-old Blue Sumatra, a breed close to its ancestors.

Somewhat belatedly, Albany Patch is pleased to offer the attached video of a handy skill, "How to Hold a Chicken."

It was one of the special demonstrations presented at Albany's annual Arts & Green Festival in May, and was conducted by Linnea Due of Laughing Frog Farm in Mendocino County and a rooster named Billy, a 7-year-old member of the Blue Sumatra breed, a clan known for being largely unchanged and an able sentry for predators.

"Billy in a Blue Sumatra," Due told the small audience at the demonstration. "Sumatras are a critically endangered breed. ... Sumatras are probably the least messed-with. Of any chicken breed, they're the closest to how they evolved."

"And they're a great breed to have because they are very aware of flying predators, and they'll warn everybody else," added Due, a former editor of the East Bay Express who has a second home in Kensington.

Laughing Frog Farm is located at Laytonville, "in the heart of GMO-free Mendocino County," according to the farm's website.
