Owners of Sam's Log Cabin Using Fundraising Campaign to Help Pay for Patio Improvements

One of the go-to hotspots for breakfast or lunch in Albany most any day of the week is Sam's Log Cabin on San Pablo Ave. 

Locals have known about Sam's since the late 90s, but for the last few years, new owners Rhasaan Fernandez and Mike Daillak have been working to put their creative thumbprint on the place with a new locally sourced, seasonal organic menu, upgrades to the cabin, and some interesting plans to expand.  

When their ownership was finalized a few months ago, the large backyard, full of potential, was at the top of their to-do list. To fund their vision, they've turned to Kickstarter and their community.

For the uninitiated, Kickstarter is a popular Crowdfunding site. Creative types post projects they hope to fund and the amount they hope to raise. Kickstarter lets them choose a timeframe to raise the funds, however the project is only funded if they reach they're goal at the end of the campaign.  

In return for individual investments, funding-seekers offer a list of rewards for backing the project.  In this case, rewards range from Coffee and a Scone for $20 all the way up to a catered backyard bash for up to 75 with live music at Sam's for $2,250.

So, hopefuls Daillak and Fernandez have been hitting the emails and social media to spread the word.  

As of July 7, one week into the Kickstarter campaign, they were a quarter of the way toward reaching their goal with 107 backers and $10,190 pledged.  But for them, it's a question of whether, at this point, the coffee mug is 1/4 full or 3/4 empty.  Since Kickstarter is all or nothing, meeting their goal is the only milestone that will make or break the campaign.

When/if they succeed, they plan to create a backyard community space that will feature additional patio dining, outdoor cooking stations, gardens, native landscapes, and a stage for live music to entertain brunch goers on the weekends.  This space will also host occasional evening music events, movie nights and other community events throughout the good weather months.
