Vote For Albany Runner In Nationwide Cross Country Contest

Sophia Nordenholz, who won a Division IV state championship title last week, has been nominated as "Girls Performer of the Week."

ALBANY, CA — Last week, runner Sophia Nordenholz won a cross country state title — and this week, she is nominated in a nationwide contest for her performance at the meet.

Nordenholz, a senior at Albany High School, became her program's first individual state champion when she won the California Division IV Cross Country State Championships, running a 3.1-mile course in 16:46.00.

Now, Nordenholz has been nominated as MileSplit USA's "National Girls Performer of the Week." She is among seven athletes in the running, and the public can vote until Friday.

MileSplit USA, a database for high school track and field and cross country, names a "National Girls Performer of the Week" and "National Boys Performer of the Week" each week. The winner, announced each Monday, gets a new pair of New Balance shoes.

Nordenholz is currently in fifth place among the nominees, with seven votes. The current first-place nominee is Natalie Cook of Flower Mound, Texas, who has 52 votes.
