Days following the devastating tornado that struck Moore, Okla. on May 20, Aliso Viejo Girl Scout Troop #1751 sprung into action for fellow scout member whose cousin had lost her entire home. The member’s 17-year-old cousin, Mckenzie Jackson’s home was destroyed, including her former elementary school and BBQ restaurant she worked at while attending high school in Moore.
According to Troop Leader Cathy Simon-Rooney, “The girls were happy to reach out to someone involved in such a tragedy.”
Using their funds raised from cookies sales, the troop donated a new bedroom chair from Jackson’s Target Relief Wish List. In addition, the Troup sent hand-written notes of encouragement. Jackson is temporarily living with a good friend until her home is reconstructed over the coming months.
“This is a perfect example of how we can all learn from a tragedy. By reaching out globally, outside our immediate community teaches our girl scouts to appreciate how fortunate they are, and that others need our help – even when we don’t know it," added Rooney.
The chair and card are scheduled to arrive in this week as a surprise to Jackson. “Hopefully, our donation can give her a little more comfort as she awaits the rebuilding of her home,” concludes Rooney.
