Bye-Bye, Barnes & Noble?

Up to a third of the chain's bookstores may close, according to a report.

Barnes & Noble may close up to a third of its bookstores over the next decade, according to news reports.

The chain would shrink from 689 stores now to 450 to 500 within a decade, CEO Mitchell Klipper told the Wall Street Journal.

No specific stores were named in the report. In Orange County, Barnes & Noble locations include Aliso Viejo, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Irvine and Tustin.

The plan reflects changing reading habits and the rise of digital books, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Every business evolves," Klipper explained.
