Residents returned to their homes, near Glenwood Drive and Aliso Creek Road, around 4 p.m.

A military explosive was found Tuesday in Aliso Viejo, which prompted the evacuation of several homes near Glenwood Drive and Aliso Creek Road.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the area around 2 p.m. where they found the "military artillery simulator," said Sgt. D.J. Haldeman of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
The device, which was encased in cardboard, was found in a greenbelt area on Glenwood Drive.

It is still unclear who left the explosive.
"You can tell from the weathering that it had been there for quite some time," Haldeman said.
Explosive detection dogs searched the surrounding area and no secondary devices were found. Residents were let back into their homes around 4 p.m.
