College Advisement Program at John Muir Receives Grant to Expand

College Access Plan (CAP), a Pasadena non-profit, currently works to mentor John Muir students and prepare them from college. They will now be able to hire two people to help expand the program.

A mentoring program at John Muir High School that provides one-on-one student/mentor relationships has received a grant that will allow it two hire two full-time staff members to expand the program.

College Access Plan (CAP), a Pasadena non-profit, will use the funds to hire two people from the Americorps VISTA program, a national program that pays recent graduates to work in volunteer capacities.  Anyone interested in applying to the program to work with CAP can contact Executive Director Mo Hyman at mo@collegeaccessplan.org

CAP's plan is to use the staff members to recruit volunteers to help serve the number of John Muir students that receive CAP services, like one-on-one mentoring and college readiness workshops, according to the group's press release.

The non-profit currently serves around 200 students and would like to increase that to 600 by moving to other PUSD high schools.

CAP's mentoring program pairs up community volunteers with students for the full duration of their high school experience.  For more on the program, check out the below story of an Altadena teen working with the group:
