Van Gogh 'Self-Portrait' at Norton Simon

Come see Vincent van Gogh's compelling "Self-Portrait" at the Norton Simon Museum.

On loan to the museum from the National Galley of Art in Washington, D.C., the work is part of the exchange series that brought Raphael’s "Small Cowper Madonna" and Vermeer’s "A Lady Writing" to the Norton Simon.

"We have a fabulous Van Gogh collection, but don't have any self-portraits here, and there aren't any in California," Chief Curator Carol Togneri said, adding Van Gogh painted 36 self-portraits, only three of which depict him as an artist.

Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in late August 1889 while recuperating at the mental asylum Saint-Paul-de-Mausole at Saint-Rémy in the south of France. He finishd the painting less than a year before his death at age 37 in July 1890.

The exhibit runs from Dec. 7-March 4.
