Driver Charged With Manslaughter After Striking Road Worker in Baldwin Park

Tatsuhiko Sakamoto allegedly struck and killed Connor Penhall of Corona, who was doing construction work on a closed section of the westbound side of the San Bernardino 10 Freeway.

An Arcardia man was charged today with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for the on a closed section of the San Bernardino 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park.

Tatsuhiko Sakamoto, 37, was also charged with DUI causing injury, driving with an .08 percent blood alcohol level causing injury and a special allegation of causing great bodily injury, said the Los Angeles Country district attorney.  Sakamoto is being held on $200,000 bail.

Sakamoto allegedly struck and killed Connor Penhall, 21-year-old resident of Corona, who was the son of Bruce Penhall, the actor and motorcycle racing champion.

According to the Penhall was operating a concrete saw on the westbound side of the freeway at Francisquito Avenue when he was killed around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Despite multiple warning signs, Sakamoto allegedly drove through traffic cones closing off the freeway at Francisquito Avenue, striking the victim. Penhall was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sakamoto is scheduled for arraignment on Monday at Pomona Superior Court, Department N.
