Residential & Commercial Refuse Rates May Go Up in Baldwin Park

The price that Baldwin Park residents pay for the trash removal service could increase to 2.67% starting next July 1st. if a request is approved at the City Council meeting on Wednesday. 

According to a memorandum sent to the Council by Edwin William Galvez, Public Works Director, Waste Management has requested an increase of 2.67 percent of the rates for residential and commercial refuse and recycling.

Galvez recommend to the City Council to approve the raise.  

Carolyne Anderson Corrao, representative of Waste Management, also mentioned in memorandum sent to the city that the proposed increase is based on a previous agreement between both parties, in which the prices were frozen for two years. 

According to Galvez, the aforementioned agreement, signed in 2009, included a contract extension with the waste removal company for three more years in exchange for not increasing the prices for the next two years. 

Galvez said price increases are commonly determined based on fuel costs and the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is a regulated measure by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S Department of Labor. 

The CPI estimates the average change in prices that consumers pay for goods and services in urban areas. 

Galvez argues that based on the CPI and fuel prices, Baldwin Park consumers would have paid an increase of 8.5% for the fiscal year of 2010-2011. 

According to a table of price changes presented, residential services would pay $18.12 dollars for a service of “35 gallons of waste, 64 gallons of recycling and 64 gallons of green waste” instead of the current price of $17.65 dollars. 

In commercial services for example, a container of 6 cubic feet with waste recollection every 2 weeks would go from 267.62 dollars to 274.77 dollars. 

The item will be discussed this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. during the city council meeting at 14403 East Pacific Avenue.
