Morgan Park Will Have Outdoor Fitness Zone

The construction of an outdoor fitness zone will start next month in as part of a $425,000 investment to be made throughout Los Angeles County's first district, according to Supervisor Gloria Molina's office.

At least three other fitness zones will be installed at county parks close to the Baldwin Park area. They are Bassett Park and Martin Park in unincorporated West Valinda and Valleydale Park in unincorporated Azusa.

Avocado Heights Park in unincorporated Avocado Heights as well as City Terrace Park and Saybrook Park in unincorporated East Los Angeles will be the other two facilities.

"Fitness Zones supply gym equipment to unincorporated neighborhoods so local residents can exercise free of charge,” said Molina in a press release. "They’ve been very successful in the ten parks areas where L.A. County already has installed them—and we’re proud to partner once again with the Trust for Public Land to construct seven more.”

According to Roxana Marquez, Molina's spokewoman, the funds will go toward the purchase and installation of outdoor fitness equipment as well as site preparation, concrete curbing, and bilingual information at each site.

Funds for this project come from Proposition A, which will cover $175,000; the Trust for Public Land will supply the remaining $250,000 through private grants. The Trust for Public Land is a national nonprofit land conservation organization.

"I think we probably will finish construction by spring next year," Marquez told Patch Latino.

Carlos Escobar, a Baldwin Park resident, reacted positively to the announcement.

"I think is a great idea to have something like that," he said. "This might help a lot of people who might not have enough money to pay for a gym," he added.
