September 11, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of a tragic event that is forever seared into the hearts and minds of all Americans. That day, nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives as a result of terrorist attacks. Many more died in the years to follow.

September 11 is now designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance, providing us a way to honor those in uniform and others who put themselves at risk on our behalf.

In Azusa, the Azusa Rotary will hold its annual Field of Glory on the lawn of the Azusa City Hall. From September 4 to September 11 they will create an impressive display featuring hundreds of large U.S. flags. Flags can be sponsored by individuals wishing to honor a friend or relative who served in the military or is a first responder. The theme, Honoring Courage and Sacrifice,” also includes the many workers whose jobs have been “essential” to our health and well-being throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

California’s community colleges play a major role in training those who serve and assist others in times of danger and extraordinary need. Pre-pandemic data show that about 80 percent of California’s EMTs, law enforcement officers and firefighters, as well as 70 percent of the state’s nurses, are trained at a California community college.

Community colleges in the greater San Gabriel Valley have also received numerous national and state recognitions for their services to veterans. During the Obama administration, a video featuring Citrus College’s Veterans Success Center and centers at several other California community colleges was shown at the White House.
