Scammer Posing As RivCo Deputy Tricks Two Families Into Paying Fake ‘Holiday Bail’

Riverside County Sheriff's officials are warning residents after more than $1,000 was stolen in a phone scam.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — With the holidays approaching, sheriff’s officials are warning residents to be on high alert after two local families were scammed out of more than $1,000 by someone impersonating a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputy.

According to the department, the scammer posed as a law enforcement officer and called the families demanding “bail payments” for their loved ones — a tactic deputies say is becoming more common as scammers prey on people’s fears and desire to keep relatives safe during the holiday season.

“Scammers know you want your loved ones home for the holidays, and they’re trying to take advantage,” the department said in a public advisory.

Authorities stressed that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department will never call residents to request bail, payment for warrants or any form of financial transaction over the phone. Deputies do not collect money through phone calls, gift cards, wire transfers, or digital payment apps.

The department urged residents to protect themselves by verifying unexpected calls, refusing any requests for payments, and reporting suspicious activity immediately. Officials also encouraged the community to spread the word so others are not victimized.
